Japanese media including the Yomiuri Shimbun and Sankei Shimbun reported on the 7th that the US administration is promoting the first “Quad Summit” by Joe Biden.
Quad is a security consultative body composed of four countries: the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, and was launched during the Donald Trump administration with the aim of restraining China’s entry into the sea.
The talks are reportedly being promoted online.
The Yomiuri Shimbun announced that the purpose of this meeting will be to confirm mutual cooperation to realize the stance of’free and open India-Pacific’.
The Sankei Shimbun also reported that the goal of’free and open Indo-Pacific’ will have the meaning of strengthening mutual cooperation and restraining China from challenging international order.
Yomiuri also announced that there will be exchanges of opinions on human rights issues in China such as Hong Kong and Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and countermeasures against the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).
This is the first time if the Quad Summit is concluded. Meetings of the four foreign ministers were held in New York in September 2019 and in Tokyo, Japan in October last year, but no summit has been held.
It is said that the success of this summit is dependent on the intention of India.
Sankei said, citing government officials, that the US, Japan, and Australia are positively considering the talks, and that if only India agrees, the talks will proceed. India is said to have been cautious at meetings with foreign ministers as it was reluctant to stimulate China.
