president of the United States Joe Biden will press the president of China Xi Jinping to prevent North Korea’s “worst trend”. Biden will also convey to Xi that Pyongyang’s weapons development will lead to an increased US military presence in Asia.
The news agency reports it AFPOn Saturday (11/12/2022), US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters, at a meeting Monday on the sidelines G20 Summit in Bali, Biden will tell Xi that China has an “interest in playing a constructive role in preventing North Korea’s worst trends.”
Biden will also tell Xi that if missile and nuclear development North Korea “Continuing as it stands today will only further strengthen the American military and security presence in the region.”
Sullivan, speaking aboard the presidential Air Force One plane en route to Cambodia for a regional ASEAN summit, said Biden would not sue China but rather give Xi “his perspective”.
This perspective is that “North Korea is a threat not only to the United States, not only to (South Korea) and Japan, but to peace and stability throughout the region,” Sullivan said.
“Whether China wants to increase pressure on North Korea is obviously up to them,” Sullivan said.
However, with North Korea expected to test a nuclear weapon soon and rapidly increase its missile capacity, “the operational situation is more acute at this point,” Sullivan said.
