Biden Will Hold Barbecue To Celebrate US Victory Over Covid

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President Joe Biden will hold a barbecue to celebrate the victory United States of America against Covid-19 as well as independence day on Sunday (4/7).

AFP reported that Biden will hold the meat-grilling event in the southern courtyard of the White House with 1,000 invited guests ranging from medical teams to military personnel and families.

The celebrations will also include a fireworks display on the National Mall as a symbol of “freedom from the virus.”

Biden is indeed considered successful in pulling the US out of the pandemic disaster after the chaos in handling Covid-19 under the Donald Trump administration.

Although the United States is still at the top of the country with the most Covid-19 cases, the transmission rate in Uncle Sam’s country has been steadily decreasing since Biden took over in January.

Since taking office, Biden has immediately focused on promoting the mask-wearing campaign and intensifying the Covid-19 vaccination program.

He also received Congressional approval to withdraw US$1.9 billion or equivalent to Rp27.6 trillion to carry out programs to protect vulnerable groups from Covid-19 and economic recovery.

However, some have questioned Biden’s decision to hold this celebration, given the government’s target to vaccinate 70 percent of the population by July 4 has not been achieved.

Some parties also think that the US still has to be wary of a spike in Covid-19 cases due to the emergence of the Delta variant of the corona virus.

Last week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reported that 6 percent of the total active Covid-19 cases in Uncle Sam’s country are delta variants.

The director of the CDC, Rochelle Walensky, told USA Today that higher rates of Delta transmission could make this mutation the dominant variant of Covid-19 in the US in the near future.

When asked about Biden’s decision, the White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, only answered briefly.

“If you have been vaccinated, the message we want to convey is that you are safe,” he said.
