The State Department issued a warning yesterday that the US will not be able to evacuate American citizens in the event of Russian military action anywhere in Ukraine. In addition, the ministry warned that the usual route to evacuate civilians through the American consulate will be more difficult after a Russian invasion.
Biden said that when Russian President Putin is “foolish enough to invade Ukraine, he is smart enough not to do anything that would adversely affect American citizens.” He added that he did not explicitly tell Putin that Americans are a border that Russians cannot cross. “I didn’t have to tell him that. He knows that,” Biden said.
Orange and red travel advice
Defense Minister Ollongren called the situation worrying. “But it is important that the dialogue continues and that there are discussions at different tables.” Minister Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs said at the end of last month that employees of the Dutch embassy in Ukraine and their families may return to the Netherlands if they wish.
Red (do not travel) and orange (only necessary) travel advice apply to Dutch citizens in Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends postponing any travel. For people who are already in Ukraine, it is recommended to consider whether it is still really necessary to stay there and leave otherwise.
