Joe Biden’s administration announced the return of stricter rules for cars that will be sold in the United States from 2023. As a reminder, under the Trump presidency, the conditions to make models less greedy had been relaxed: it Manufacturers were asked to improve the energy performance of their models by 1.5% per year between 2021 and 2026, while the Obama administration had set 5%.
Joe Biden wants to give a boost with strict consumption standards in order to return to the trajectory decided under the Obama era, and even to go beyond. With the new regulations, cars must be able by 2026 to travel 40 miles (64.4 kilometers) at continuous speed in real conditions on one gallon of fuel (3.8 liters).
This corresponds to approximately 6 l / 100 km. And this concerns the whole market, including pick-ups, still often far from this result! Suffice to say that it is a small revolution that will take place at Uncle Sam. To achieve this, manufacturers will therefore have to accelerate the electrification of their range. Ford sets an example with its latest pick-ups: the little Maverick is available as a simple hybrid, the famous F-150 has just been available in 100% electric.
For Joe Biden, the primary goal is of course to reduce pollution from cars in the United States. But the rule also wants to help Americans reduce their fuel budget. On the other side of the Atlantic too, prices at the pump have soared in 2021.
