Biden wants to make African-American ex-general minister of defense

According to media reports, US President-elect Joe Biden wants to nominate former General Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense. Biden wanted to make the 67-year-old the first African-American Pentagon boss, reported several US media on Monday.

Austin served in Iraq and Afghanistan and participated in the 2003 invasion of Baghdad by US forces. He later became the first African-American general to be appointed head of US Central Command Centcom.

According to Politico magazine, Biden could officially announce Austin’s nomination on Tuesday. Like the other candidates for the future president’s cabinet, the ex-general has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.
