President-elect Joe Biden has asked top virologist Anthony Fauci to continue advising him on how to tackle the coronavirus after he is inaugurated. Biden said this during an interview with Thursday CNN. Fauci, currently one of President Trump’s chief advisers on the virus, is frequently at odds with the White House over the strategy to pursue.
Trump regularly ignores advice given to him by Fauci and other corona advisers, including wearing face masks for a long time. Fauci regularly expresses his views in the media on the president’s strategy, often making him a target of criticism for Trump supporters.
The 79-year-old immunologist has led the US Government Institute of Infectious Diseases since 1984. He will continue to do so under Biden.
In the interview, Biden said he also wanted to make the wearing of face masks mandatory for the first hundred days of his term. “Not forever, just for a hundred days,” he emphasized. Biden will mandate wearing where possible, such as in federal buildings and planes and buses.
According to him, this will lead to a significant decrease in corona infections in the United States. With over 14 million cases, the US currently has the largest number in the world.
Get corona vaccine in public
Biden said he wanted to get a corona vaccine as soon as possible if Fauci says it is safe. Plus, he wants to get it in public then. “People have lost faith in the effectiveness of a vaccine. It is very important as president to communicate that it is safe.”
This week, his predecessors Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, already made known to participate in a vaccination campaign. They too want to be given a corona vaccine in public.
