Biden Vows US Will Defend Taiwan If Attacked By China

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President Joe Biden pathetic United States of America will defend Taiwan if attacked by China.

“Yes, we have a commitment to that,” Biden said without hesitation when asked at CNN Townhall about whether the US will defend Taiwan.

Biden is also confident in saying that the US is capable of keeping up with China’s rapidly developing military technology.

“Don’t worry about whether they (China) will be stronger. China, Russia and the rest of the world know that we have the most powerful military in the history of the world,” Biden said.

Biden also alluded that US rival countries such as China “may engage in activities in which they can make serious mistakes”.

Biden referred to his long-standing relationship with President Xi Jinping and emphasized the US position of not wanting to “start a new Cold War with China.”

“I just want to make China understand that we (the US) will not back down,” Biden said.

Biden’s statement contradicts US policy so far, which is known for its strategy of ambiguity in dealing with relations with China and Taiwan.

So far, the US does not have official relations with Taiwan, but has an agreement to help the region, especially in the field of defense from all aggressions.

U.S. -Taiwan relations are enshrined in the Taiwan Relations Act agreement.

Biden made a similar promise last August in an ABC interview. He insisted that he would defend key US allies, including Taiwan, despite the “failure” of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan that helped the Taliban take control of the country.

On the occasion, Biden said the United States maintains a “sacred commitment” to defending NATO allies in Europe and “same with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.”

Reported AFP, the White House reiterated that US policy on Taiwan “has not changed”.

Biden’s remarks on Taiwan come as tensions between Taipei and Beijing continue to heat up.

In recent times, China and Taiwan have even threatened to fight over sovereignty.

President Xi Jinping stressed that he would realize the unification of China and Taiwan. Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen vowed not to bring his country to its knees against China.

Biden’s comments also came after a Financial Times report that China had tested an advanced hypersonic missile with nuclear capacity that flew around the planet before landing, although it did not hit the target.

The United States and Russia are racing to develop their own hypersonic weapons, which are more difficult to defend than existing ballistic missile arsenals.
