It is important for President Biden to support the prosecution of Russia’s war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine, Carpenter said.
US President Joseph Biden ordered that evidence of Russian war crimes be turned over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. On Tuesday, August 8, US Permanent Representative to the OSCE Michael Carpenter said in an interview with Ukrinform.
“Yes, I can confirm that the President decided that it is very important for us that there is the possibility of being held accountable for various war crimes and other atrocities that Russia has committed in Ukraine. And our approach is to support all the actors that are involved in the process of holding accountable,” said the US Ambassador to the OSCE.
He stressed that the United States supports the creation of an international tribunal to consider the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
“The fact that we supported the International Criminal Court obliges us to share information with it. I think President Biden has decided that it is essential that we do this and support the ICC not only in words but also in providing the factual information that we have,” Carpenter said.
At the same time, he did not specify the nature of the information that the United States transmitted to the ICC.
As you know, on March 17, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of illegally deporting thousands of children from Ukraine. Also, a warrant was issued for the children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova.
Then the Kremlin hastened to declare that the Russian Federation does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC and that it considers its decision “insignificant”. At the same time, Putin decided not to go to the BRICS summit in South Africa, because he faces arrest there on a warrant issued.
