The twelve-story apartment building Champlain Towers South had partially collapsed in the middle of the night a week ago. The misfortune had taken people by surprise in their sleep. Since then, rescue workers have been feverishly looking for missing people in the rubble.
On Wednesday evening (local time) the number of recovered fatalities rose again. Two more victims were found in the rubble, said the mayor of Miami-Dade district, Daniella Levine Cava, at the crash site in Surfside near Miami. Two children between the ages of four and ten were among the fatalities, it said.
The exact cause of the accident is unknown. However, in 2018 an expert report had already found “major structural damage” to the building, which was completed in 1981.
