Biden talks to Brazilian President Lula… “Safe support for democracy, invitation to Washington in early February”

US President Joe Biden yesterday (9th) condemned the violence related to the results of the Brazilian presidential elections in a phone call with Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula Dasuba.

The US White House said in a statement that President Biden “condemned the violence and attacks on democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power” in the call.

President Biden also “provided firm US support for democracy in Brazil and the free will of the Brazilian people, expressed in the recent Brazilian presidential election, which was won by President Lula.”

In that day’s call, “President Biden invited President Lula to visit Washington in early February for in-depth discussions on a broad range of joint programs, and President Lula agreed,” the White House said.

In Brazil, on the 8th, thousands of supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who lost the October presidential elections, stormed the Brazilian parliament, the supreme court and the presidential palace.

Meanwhile, the White House said it has not yet received an official request from the Brazilian government regarding Bolsonaro’s status in the United States, who entered the United States late last month.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said he would seriously consider the Brazilian government’s request.
