Gentiloni: “Between Russia and the EU it is the end of a great hope”
Between the EU and Russia “it is the end in some ways also of great hope”. So Paolo Gentiloni, EU Commissioner for Economy, in Bologna from the stage of Repubblica delle Idee. At the beginning of the century there were “great illusions”, such as “Russia’s entry into the G8. This great hope for several years now – perhaps we have not valued the annexation of Crimea enough – has faded. Putin is a person with a lucid design. He considers the dissolution of the USSR a historical defeat and thinks it is necessary to rebuild a geopolitical sphere around Russia, and therefore to expand towards the various EU countries ”.

Borrell: “Russia uses wheat as a tool of blackmail”
The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Joseph Borrell denounced in an article on his blog Russia’s maneuvers aimed at “militarizing” wheat exports and “using them as an instrument of blackmail against anyone who opposes its aggression” in Ukraine. The number one of European diplomacy then recalled that “Putin’s troops bomb, extract and occupy Ukraine, attack agricultural equipment” but also “warehouses, markets, roads, bridges in Ukraine and block ports, preventing export of millions of tons of wheat to global markets “.
According to Borrell, Moscow “has transformed the Black Sea into a war zone, blocking shipments of grain and fertilizers from Ukraine, but also affecting Russian merchant shipping”. Russia’s “war against Ukraine threatens to create a global wave of hunger. We must allow “Kiev” to export its cereals across the Black Sea – he later stressed -. We are ready to work with the United Nations and our partners to prevent any unwanted impact on global food security ”.

German police investigate hundreds of war crimes
The Federal Office of the German Criminal Police (BKA) has announced that it is investigating several hundred potential Russian war crimes committed in Ukraine, also specifying that it is looking for the military and political instigators of these crimes. “We have received more than hundreds of indications so far,” Bka President Holger Münch told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper. The investigation focuses not only on the perpetrators of war crimes, but also on the military and political leaders of these crimes. “This is the most difficult part of our investigation, a complex puzzle job,” Münch said. “Our clear aim is to identify those responsible for atrocities, prove their acts through our investigations and bring them to justice”, ;; also in Germany, which applies universal justice by allowing certain crimes to be tried regardless of where they have been committed. But “it may take some time” because investigations into the war in Ukraine are only “just beginning,” admitted Münch.
