Biden takes action against Cuban regime: ‘This is just the beginning’ | Abroad

According to US President Joe Biden, “this is just the beginning.” The US will continue to punish those responsible for the oppression of the Cuban people, he assured.

Biden “unequivocally condemned the mass detentions and mock trials that unjustly lead to prison terms” of those who dared speak out. He calls this an attempt to intimidate and silence the Cuban people. He said Cubans have “the same right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly as all people.” The US stands behind the “brave Cubans who have taken to the streets to resist 62 years of repression under a communist regime,” he added.

At the surprising demonstrations earlier this month, which had not been seen on this scale for a quarter of a century, at least one person was killed. Thousands of people expressed their dissatisfaction with their living conditions and the communist rulers.

President Diaz-Canel had previously warned his followers to act against the “provocations” of the protesters. Cuba accuses the US of unleashing and inflaming the protest movement. The White House denies this and speaks of “spontaneous” demonstrations, motivated by the bitterness about the existence that many Cubans lead.
