Climate change and improving international relations are priorities
The most notable change in political direction was Kerry’s appointment as special envoy of the president on climate change issues.
While serving as US Secretary of State under the Obama administration, Kerry was a key driver of the nuclear deal with Iran and the Paris Climate Accord, two agreements Trump canceled immediately when he was inaugurated as president.
Trump declared both agreements a failure of US diplomacy and called Kerry the worst Secretary of State in US history “.
Responding to his nomination by Biden, Kerry said the US would soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as an urgent national security threat.

If confirmed by the US Senate, Blinken will become a major force for the new US administration to improve international relations, especially with long-standing US allies, whom the Trump administration has sidelined for four years.
