United States President Joe Biden said on Saturday that the United States had sent a private message to Iran that Yemen’s Houthi militants, which it backs, were responsible for attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
As European Pravda writes, he told reporters this at the White House before leaving for the weekend at his residence at Camp David, reports Reuters.
“We did this (Iran’s message) privately, and we are confident that we were well prepared,” the American leader emphasized.
Asked whether Biden, whose administration removed the Houthi militants from the State Department’s list of “foreign terrorist organizations” in 2021, believes the term “terrorist” now describes the group, the US president responded in the affirmative.
The Houthi group has threatened a “strong and effective response” after the US struck again in Yemen on the night of January 13.
Let us recall that on the night of January 12, the United States, in coordination with Great Britain and with the support of Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Bahrain launched joint strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.
In particular, Britain reported that four of their RAF Typhoon FGR4 fighters supported by the Voyager tanker aircraft used guided bombs Paveway IV to strike two Houthi targets.
This comes after the Houthis on Tuesday carried out the most massive attack using missiles and drones on ships in the Red Sea.
White House spokesman John Kirby said Friday that the initial strikes had undermined the Houthis’ ability to store, launch and control missiles or drones, which the group has used to threaten shipping. He said Washington is not interested in a war with Yemen.
