Biden seeks emergency fund to deal with border crisis – 2024-03-13 17:40:13

Joe Biden, president of the United States, would be seeking to apply an emergency fund of 4.7 billion dollars (USD) for fiscal year 2025, which would focus on border security.

According to the media NBC News, This emergency fund would serve to reinforce the operations carried out by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the event of an increase in immigration.

DHS would have access to this fund if the number of undocumented migrants crossing the border illegally exceeds a certain unspecified threshold.

If the money is not used to deal with an increase in migration, it would be transferred to the general funds of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Administration for the Management of Migration. Emergencies (FEMA).

Despite the advantages this represents, Biden’s proposal will likely face resistance from Republicans in the US Congress, who have criticized his methods in dealing with the crisis at the border.

Recently, the legislative opposition refused to approve financing of 13.6 billion USD requested by Bien as an emergency to respond to the record increase in migrants on the border between the US and Mexican territory, so it is likely that the new request will be received in the same way.

Biden’s request not only seeks to strengthen border security, but also to deal with the different problems in the area. To do this, he requests $405 million to hire 1,300 additional US Border Patrol (USBP) agents, as well as funds to maintain ICE’s existing 34,000 detention beds.

Likewise, US$1 billion would be allocated to help Central America and another almost US$1 billion would go towards resolving the backlog of more than 2.4 million cases pending in the country’s immigration courts.

This budget would also be used to hire 1,000 additional CBP agents to deal with drug smuggling at the border, while $849 million would be used to procure fentanyl detection technology.
