US President Joe Biden promised the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, that he would soon appoint Qatar as his main non-NATO ally. In particular, it is planned to give a special status to a key partner in a troubled region.

During a meeting in the Oval Office, Biden said he plans to notify the US Congress soon of the designation the United States is giving to close non-NATO allies that have a strategic working relationship with the US military.
“Qatar is a good friend, a reliable and capable partner. And I will inform Congress that I will designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally to reflect the importance of our relationship. I think this is long overdue,” Biden said.
