US President Joe Biden on Tuesday issued three presidential decrees reversing some of his predecessor Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies.
Among other things, Biden has ordered that the asylum procedure for refugees who have crossed the Mexican-American border be reviewed. In addition, the new president has created a task force to reunite hundreds of migrant children and their parents, who have been separated under the policies of the Trump administration. A third warrant provides aid to Central American countries and fighting corruption there to limit the flow of migration.
The president’s spokesman, Jen Psaki, tried to dampen expectations earlier in the day. “It won’t happen overnight,” she warned.
“We are going to work to undo the moral and national shame of the previous government, which literally, not figuratively, dragged children out of the arms of their families,” Biden said as he signed the decrees.
Earlier announcement of major reform
Biden previously announced a major reform of immigration policy that means that illegal migrants can have a chance to get permanent residency in five years and become eligible for US citizenship after eight years. It is possible that Biden will encounter resistance from the Republicans, who see little in a more generous immigration policy.
