China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs laid out a series of points to achieve peace in Ukraine. The President of the United States is not very impressed.
It was on the night of Friday that the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs came up with a proposal on how to end the war in Ukraine.
Cold war mentality must end, one must return to the negotiating table, and “one country’s security cannot come at the expense of another country’s security”.
US President Joe Biden has now commented on the proposal for the first time, and the cheers are unstoppable.
– I don’t see anything in the peace plan for China that will be beneficial to anyone other than Russia, says the president in a new interview with ABC, according to Reuters.
At the same time, he says that the US has put the Ukrainians in a position where they can make progress during the spring and summer. He is also asked direct questions about F-16 fighters and answers:
– He (Zelenskyj) doesn’t need it right now.
Biden gets follow-up questions about whether he rules out sending the F-16.
– I rule it out as of now.
In recent days there has been speculation as to whether China is about to help Russia with weapons for the war against Ukraine.
The US president says in the interview that he is not “expecting any major initiative from China to assist with weapons”.
He also says that the US will respond if China decides to send weapons to Russia. He suggests that the answer in that case will be heavy sanctions.
Nor has NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg expressed any faith in the Chinese “peace alternative”.
He points out that the great power in the East has not yet condemned Russia’s invasion.
– They therefore do not have much credibility, he said in Tallinn on Friday.
China’s statement states that UN rules must be respected, but the country has not condemned the Russian invasion.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that he views parts of the peace plan from China positively, and believes that it expresses respect for the country’s territorial sovereignty.
Russia has also expressed itself positively towards the peace plan, but Maria Zakharova in the Russian Foreign Ministry believes that a plan must involve “recognition of the new territorial realities in Ukraine”.
It means recognizing areas Russia has illegally annexed.
