Biden raised the issue of support for Ukraine

US President Joe Biden met with and. O. Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Vice Chancellor, candidate for the post of head of the German government of Germany Olaf Scholz. At the meeting, Biden raised the issue of supporting Ukraine.

He congratulated Chancellor Merkel on more than 16 years of leadership on issues critical to shared security and prosperity, as well as to transatlantic relations.

“Biden stressed the importance of continuing work on the implementation of the Joint Statement of the United States and Germany on support for Ukraine and European energy security, so that Russia cannot manipulate natural gas flows for harmful political purposes,” the statement said.

The leaders also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, including efforts to ensure the continuation of humanitarian assistance. President Biden thanked Germany for hosting 35,000 Afghans who have moved to the United States.
