Biden Questions China’s Capacity to Invade Taiwan Amid Economic Woes

US President Biden has expressed the view that the recent deterioration of China’s economy may weaken its desire to invade Taiwan. He said China has its “hands full” in dealing with economic problems.

Biden held a press conference in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he visited after the G20 Summit, and announced that he had met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the summit. When asked by a reporter why he hasn’t spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping in the past 10 months, Biden said Xi “seems to have his hands full right now.” President Xi has decided not to attend the G20.

China “has severe economic problems right now for a variety of reasons related to international growth, or the lack thereof, and the policies that the country has implemented,” Biden said. “I don’t think this will push China to invade Taiwan. In fact, it’s probably the opposite; China won’t have the same capabilities as before,” he added.

Biden also touched on escalating tensions between the United States and China over technological innovation.

“We have no intention of selling to China components that would increase our ability to manufacture nuclear weapons or to engage in defense activities,” President Biden said.

“We don’t want to contain China,” he said, adding that he just wants to make sure that he has a trusting and good relationship with China.
