White House spokesman Janepsaki said: The government of President Joe Biden has proposed an extension of the Strategic Disarmament Treaty (START) with Russia, which will end on Feb. 5, for another five years, according to earlier news.
“The United States intends to extend the life of the treaty by another five years as the treaty agreement opens up. This extension is very important at a time when relations between the US and Russia are tense at this time. ”
The US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby said: Americans will be safer if the START pact persists and extends them. Failure to quickly renew the treaty would worsen US understanding of Russia’s long-range nuclear armament.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated its stance that the treaty should be extended unconditionally. The best option is to renew for another five years as specified in the original treaty.
The START treaty between the US and Russia has been in effect since February 5, 2011, for a period of 10 years and both parties can be renewed for up to five years.
