(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Yoo Yu-ju = The US government is seeking a strategic alliance with Vietnam to contain China, Politico, a US political media outlet, reported on the 18th (local time).
According to reports, three sources familiar with the matter said that President Biden plans to visit Vietnam in the middle of next month as a state guest and sign a strategic partnership agreement with Vietnam.
Politico said the agreement to be signed will lead to new cooperation between the two countries that will boost Vietnam’s recent efforts to develop high-tech fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI) development.
Following the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement signed in 2013 during the former US administration of Barack Obama, the two countries strengthened cooperation in areas such as public health and support for the Vietnam Coast Guard.
The news on this day came as the United States strengthened its efforts to contain China and increase its influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
On this day, President Biden held a Korea-US-Japan summit at Camp David, a US presidential resort near Washington, DC, and agreed to strengthen security and economic cooperation between the three countries.
Politico pointed out that the strategic alliance with Vietnam aims to bring Vietnam closer to the United States than to China.
At the same time, President Biden commented that through the alliance, the US will be able to expand its influence in the Indian region, where Chinese power is growing.
Vietnam is a country whose conflict with China is worsening over territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
As the economic relationship between the US and China is shrinking, it is attracting attention as a low-cost producer that will partially replace China in the global supply chain.
