The immunization campaign in the United States marks time: this is how the president tries with economic incentives

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
WASHINGTON
Joe Biden tries by all means to relaunch the vaccination campaign, offering 100 dollars to those who agree to be immunized. The president, as he admitted on TV, forced to chase the unpredictable developments of the contagion. Yesterday the CDC, the federal authority for the control and prevention of infectious diseases, confirmed the disturbing news already anticipated by Anthony Fauci. The Delta variant is now the absolute master of the field and can also infect fully vaccinated people. Of course, those who have completed the cycle of doses can almost always contract a disease with mild symptoms. However the problem is that it can transmit the virus to others. This, at least, is what emerges from a study conducted in Provincetown, Massachussetts: out of 469 new cases, two thirds concern immunized people.

The Administration objectively in difficulty. The president swings conspicuously. On the one hand, it seems to want to prepare the country for new and severe restrictive measures. Lawyers from the Department of Justice are looking into whether it is legal to impose a vaccination requirement for everyone. And Biden announced a squeeze on employees in federal administrations: those who do not get vaccinated will have to undergo continuous tests, even two to three times a week. At the same time, however, the president opens the festival of incentives. For example, entrepreneurs will be fully reimbursed who will grant a few hours of paid leave to employees who are absent to be administered the serum.

But the most controversial passage of the speech Biden said the other day this: In February, the Kroger’s food supply chain was offering $ 100 to its employees who got vaccinated. And it worked …. States like New Mexico, Ohio, Colorado are offering similar incentives to increase the rate of immunized people. So today I appeal to all states and local communities to use the funds they received from the American Rescue Plan to give $ 100 to everyone who gets vaccinated. I know that paying people to get them vaccinated may seem unfair to someone who has already done so. But here’s the thing: if incentives help us beat the virus, I think we should use them.

In fact, Congress has approved another destination for the funds of the American Rescue Plan: strengthen hospitals and services in the area. Now, however, Biden’s message that public health can and must be monetized. If the White House fails to convince the Americans in the name of science and a higher collective interest (the president’s recurring words), then try to buy them with a fistful of dollars.
