Biden meets with Saudi prince and accuses him of killing journalist Khashoggi

Biden arrived in Saudi Arabia to reset relations with Saudi Arabia.

US President Joe Biden meets Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the first time and accuses him of killing Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Writes about it Reuters.

The accusations followed almost immediately after the greetings.

Biden arrived in Saudi Arabia to reset relations with the country, which he called a pariah after the Khashoggi assassination in 2018.

“Regarding the killing of Khashoggi, I raised the issue at the beginning of the meeting, making it clear that I thought about it at the time and what I think about it now. I was direct. I made my point very clear. I said very bluntly that The silence of the American President on the issue of human rights is incompatible with who we are and who I am,” Biden told reporters.

Mohammed bin Salman, Biden added, told him he was not personally responsible for the crime. But the American head replied that he considered him guilty.

The US President specified that the parties also discussed energy and that he expects Saudi Arabia, a major oil producer, to act in the coming weeks.

Energy and security interests have prompted Biden and his aides to decide not to isolate the Gulf oil giant, which is strengthening ties with Russia and China, despite the American president’s distaste for the assassination.

Biden wants to “recalibrate” Washington’s relationship with Saudi Arabia, not sever it, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said.

The murder of Khashoggi: the details of the crime

Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered Special Forces fighters from Riyadh at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018. Mohammed bin Salman took responsibility for what happened, but denies that he ordered the journalist’s death.

In December 2019, a court in Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death in the Khashoggi murder case. Three others were sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison on charges of trying to cover up the crime.
