The campaign of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, launched a new television ad this Saturday in which the president jokes about his age, an issue that worries voters ahead of the November elections.

«Look, I’m not young. That is not a secret”, says Biden, 81, in the ad, addressing the camera.

«But here is the key: I understand how things can be achieved for the American people. I have led the country to get it out of the covid crisis. Today, we have the strongest economy in the worldargues the president, alluding to his experience.

The ad highlights the contrast between his vision of the United States and that of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), who is heading unopposed to be the Republican candidate in the November elections.

In response to the ad issued by the Biden campaign, Trump’s team released another ad that begins with the phrase: “Look, I’m not young. That’s no secret,” and then images of the president stumbling on the stairs to board the presidential plane Air Force One follow.

The video includes the fall that Biden experienced in June of last year during a military ceremony in Colorado, in which he tripped on some sandbags used to hold devices on stage.

TRUMP AND THE DIRTY CAMPAIGN

The Trump campaign broadcast the new ad on its X social network account, but did not specify whether it will also be broadcast on national television.

The ad designed by the Biden campaign, in which he jokes about his age, is the first of an advertising campaign that will last six weeks and in which the Democratic leader’s team has invested $60 million.

Those Biden ads will air in key states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and will be especially targeted at young voters and those who identify as Hispanic and African American, crucial to his re-election.

An NBC poll, published last month, revealed that 62% of voters felt “great concern” about the president’s age.

Biden, the oldest president in the history of the United States, already addressed the issue during the State of the Union speech he gave this Thursday in front of both houses of Congress and in which he was especially energetic, which has contributed to silence, at least temporarily, criticism about his age.

During his speech, he also made jokes about his age and argued that the real problem is the “old” ideas of his rival, Trump, who seeks to return the United States to a time of “hate, anger and revenge.” EFE
