President Joe Biden’s campaign has taken a swipe at supporters of former Republican front-runner Nikki Haley, who dropped out of the race this month as Donald Trump’s latest opponent in the party’s primary.
“Nikki Haley voters, Donald Trump does not want your vote,” Biden said in a social media post that included a hyperlink to a new campaign ad. “I want to be clear: there is a place for you in my campaign,” he added.
The ad shows Trump calling Haley “cock-brained” and rejecting her candidacy. “She’s gone crazy, she’s a very angry person,” Trump said of the former US ambassador to the United Nations.
Representatives for Haley and Trump did not respond to a request for comment.
Haley persisted with her candidacy after all other nominees had dropped out, promising policies that appealed to Republican voters who reject Trump. About 570,000 voters in three crucial states (Nevada, North Carolina and Michigan) voted for Haley in the primary, a small number but significant given that these states were decided by a narrow margin in the previous election.
Biden, 81, will need all the support he can get, as concerns have been raised about his age and health in the run-up to a second term. Recent Reuters/Ipsos polls put his approval rating at 40 percent and predict a neck-and-neck battle with the 77-year-old Trump in the Nov. 5 election.
