As the Democratic Party defeated Arizona and Nevada back-to-back and locked control of the Senate, the “Guardian” named the biggest winner and biggest loser in the 13-year midterm elections.
Biden is the number one winner
The biggest winners of the US midterm elections selected by the “Guardian” are US President Biden, Florida Governor, Republican Ron DeSantis and Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman.
As the top-ranked “biggest winner,” Biden came under attack from Republicans before the results of the U.S. midterm elections were announced one by one. Republicans are running ads across the country in hopes that Biden and his Democratic Party will repel voters. However, that doesn’t seem to be working, as Democrats overall are doing much better than expected. Biden, while still deeply unpopular, dropping 39% in a Reuters poll this week, doesn’t seem to sway the Democratic Party about him. This result could prompt Biden to firmly believe in his candidacy for the presidency again.
Biden-led Democrats have also scored key victories in some places for their advocacy of abortion rights. Among them, Michigan voters approved a ballot to grant the constitutional right to abortion. Kentucky voters rejected a bill that rejected constitutional protections for abortion rights.
The second “biggest winner” was Republican Ron DeSantis of Florida, who easily won re-election by a large margin in what was expected to be a swing state. He made the front page of the New York Post, calling him the future of the Republican Party. He’s been wary that he will run for president in 2024, but if DeSantis wants to launch a campaign, he’s a good place to start.
