Current US President Joe Biden is extremely unpopular among Catholics, according to a poll published by the Pew Research Center.
According to the poll, neither Biden nor his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, is popular among the majority of Catholics polled. However, of the two, Biden is the more unpopular.
The survey is part of the “Religion and Politics before the US Elections” project, which is led by Pew Research Center Deputy Research Director Greg Smith. The survey was presented at the annual conference of the Religious News Association, which concluded over the weekend.
Catholics don’t like Biden
The survey was conducted in late February among 12,000 American adults. The results showed that only 35% of Catholics have a positive view of Biden, while 64% have a negative opinion of the current president.
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has the approval of 42% of Catholics, while 57% have an unfavorable opinion of the former president.
Trump’s advantage over Biden among Catholics is ensured by white Catholics, the majority of whom (54%) have a positive opinion of the former president. However, Trump is less popular among Hispanic Catholics, among whom only 32% view him favorably.
Speaking at a pro-abortion rally in Florida on April 23, 2024, President Biden was baptized.
Recent statistics show that there are 52 million Catholics in the United States. This means that every fifth adult resident of the USA professes this faith. Among American Catholics, 57% are white, and 33% are Hispanic.
The survey showed a clear difference in political views between Catholics who attend Mass at least once a month and those who do not. Regardless of ethnicity, among all Catholics who attend Mass monthly or more often, 61% identify with the Republican Party.
“Catholic in name, but in fact a nihilist”
In this context, it is worth noting that last month Cardinal Gerhard Mueller accused US President Joe Biden of supporting abortion and suggested excommunicating such politicians from the Church. Cardinal Mueller said that although Biden often publicly positions himself as a believer, in reality he is “nominally Catholic, but in fact a nihilist.” “This is cynicism, and cynicism is absolute,” the cardinal concluded.
Biden’s opponent, Donald Trump, officially belongs to Protestants, namely the Presbyterian Church. He positions himself as a defender of traditional America, which was built largely on biblical principles. However, some American Christians have questions about the politician’s lifestyle, which has not always been consistent with Christian morality. But because he advocates a more moderate course on the legalization of abortion, LGBT advocacy, and also opposes uncontrolled migration, which increases crime in the country, Trump enjoys much more support from practicing Christians than the representative of the Democratic Party.
