US President-elect Joe Biden announced on Monday that he had appointed Antonie Blinken, an experienced foreign adviser and former deputy secretary of state, and John Kerry, a former senior diplomat, special envoy for climate change.
Biden has nominated Cuban-born lawyer Alejandro Majorca as Minister of Homeland Security. If approved, he will be the first Latin American under the leadership of the Ministry of Homeland Security.
Former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Avril Heinz Biden, has been appointed Director of National Intelligence.
All government candidates are veterans of the Obama-Biden administration and highly experienced in their fields.
“We do not have time to lose when it comes to national security and foreign policy,” Biden said in a statement.
“These people are equally experienced and tested in crises, as well as innovative and gifted,” said Biden.
The US media explained that Blinken’s appointment as Secretary of State could signal a readiness to return to multilateralism, from which the current White House owner Donald Trump will turn away in his foreign policy.
Blinken, 58, a longtime contributor to Biden, has already served as Deputy Secretary of State in the Barack Obama administration.
If the Senate approves his candidacy, Blinken will replace Mike Pompeo, whose priorities have been a more determined confrontation with China and the containment of Iran.
Blinken’s appointment could improve relations with the US traditional allies, which were undermined during Trump’s presidency.
