Madrid. US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is “still possible” after the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) rejected a new truce proposal following negotiations in Doha (Qatar) between the mediating powers, considering that the new plan “suits Israel’s conditions.”
“(The ceasefire) is still in progress, we are not giving up, it is still possible,” the president told reporters, at a time when the head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, has traveled to the region, where he will meet with the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to push forward the negotiations.
Hamas, which has not participated directly in this round of negotiations, has accused Netanyahu of withdrawing from the points agreed upon more than two months ago, announced by Biden and endorsed by the UN Security Council. Thus, it has urged the mediating countries – the US, Egypt and Qatar – to force Israel to implement what was agreed “so that the negotiations do not enter a vicious circle.”
