The Taiwanese government expressed gratitude and respect to US President Joe Biden for communicating concerns over Taiwan pressure to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to the Reuters news agency on the 11th, Xavier Chang, spokesman for Tsai Ing-won, Taiwanese President’s Office, said in a statement that “President Biden expresses his respect and appreciation for expressing concern over the security and human rights issues of the Taiwan Strait.”
He added, “As a member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to work closely with our allies, including the United States, to jointly contribute to stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”
Earlier on the day, President Biden said in his first phone call with President Xi, “China’s coercive and unfair practices, human rights crackdown in Hong Kong, human rights violations against Uyghur people in Xinjiang, and more and more in the Indo-Pacific region including Taiwan. We express our fundamental concern about the ongoing military action.” Since its inauguration on the 20th of last month, the Biden administration has seen China’s reinforcement of military activities in the waters near Taiwan, and relations with Taiwan are “solid”. China has regularly reaffirmed that Taiwan is the most important and sensitive issue in relations with the United States, and has expressed uncomfortable feelings in the United States. During the Trump administration, he was furious at the increased contact between the United States and Taiwan and the increased sales of US arms to Taiwan.
President Xi also responded to Vice President Biden on that day, saying that the United States, along with Hong Kong and Xinjiang, said that Taiwan is a sovereignty and territorial issue of China, hoping for a cautious approach.
Taiwan is gaining support from the Biden administration’s vows of support. On that day, Taiwan and the United States held their first official high-level meeting in Washington after the inauguration of the Biden administration.
Taiwanese representative Xiao Mei-chin, who serves as Taiwan’s actual ambassador to the United States, met with Sung Kim, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific, to discuss mutual interests.
The United States, like most countries in the world, does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan. However, on the international stage, they are spared no support and supply of weapons to Taiwan.
