Sources familiar with the matter said Secretary of State Anthony Blinkon and his aides had called senators to provide support for the lifting of sanctions on the pipeline. They added that the Biden administration’s decision was motivated by its intention to keep Germany as an ally, especially if tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalate into a new armed conflict.
Earlier this month, the United States adopted a new set of sanctions against Russian companies related to Nord Stream 2, a move condemned by Moscow.
