Biden declares state of emergency in snow-ravaged New York state | Abroad

The major winter storm that is weighing down the United States has caused quite a few problems in recent days, especially in the western state of New York. At least 27 people were killed in and around the city of Buffalo alone. President Joe Biden is now coming to the aid of the state.

Extreme winter weather has been causing problems in the country since last week. According to NBC News the blizzard has already claimed at least 60 lives across all affected states. This death toll is expected to continue to rise.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also warned on Monday of the consequences of the extreme weather. It’s the most destructive blizzard in state history, she said. Also in 1977, New York City was hit by a severe snowstorm. It caused thirty casualties.

Nearly four feet of snow has fallen in Buffalo since Friday. Emergency services were busy clearing the snow on Monday. Although there is a traffic ban, people still took to the streets. As a result, there are many vehicles stuck on the side of the road.

Dead bodies were found, among other things, in these stranded vehicles. People have also died from overexertion while shoveling snow. New York is now advising residents to remove the snow safely.

In the night between Monday and Tuesday, Biden declared a state of emergency in the state. This measure allows the government, for example, to send money and relief workers to the area.

Snow is also expected in Buffalo on Tuesday. Temperatures in the affected states are expected to rise later in the week.
