US President Joe Biden announced today that Washington will impose more than 500 new sanctions aimed at Russia in an effort to increase pressure on Moscow on the occasion of the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Washington will also impose new export restrictions on nearly 100 organizations that provide support to Russia and will take action to further reduce Russian revenue from energy sales, Biden said in a statement.
The measures are aimed at holding Russia accountable for the war in Ukraine and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Biden said, as Kiev faces acute ammunition shortages and US military aid has been delayed for months in the US Congress.
The new sanctions also affect the payment system “Mir” and the production of electricityincluding large-scale liquefied natural gas project.
“They will ensure that Putin pays an even higher price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,” Biden said of the sanctions.
The measures will be aimed at persons connected with the sending of Navalny to prison and his attitude towards him, as well as with Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base, supply networks and sanctions circumventors across continentsthe US president also said.
