Biden Criticizes Netanyahu Over Gaza Strikes, Calls for Ceasefire

Jakarta

President of the United States, Joe Biden, criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the war in Gaza. Biden said Netanyahu had made a mistake.

“I think what he did was a mistake. I don’t agree with his approach,” Biden told Univision, the US Spanish-language TV network, as reported AFPWednesday (10/4/2024).

Biden highlighted Israel’s air strikes in Gaza last week. The attack is known to have resulted in the deaths of 7 humanitarian workers.

Biden also urged Israel to immediately implement a ceasefire in Gaza. He also asked the Israeli government to make it easier for the community to access incoming aid Gaza.

“So what I’m calling for is for Israel to call a ceasefire, giving total access to all food and medicine coming into the country for the next six, eight weeks,” Biden said.

America is known to be Israel’s closest ally so far. In the war in Gaza which has been raging since October 2023, America initially provided support to Israel.

However, this support now seems to be changing. America often criticizes Israel’s military policy which continues to carry out attacks in Gaza.

Biden’s interview with Univision highlights the Israeli killing of World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza which sparked global outrage. Biden and Netanyahu were also reportedly involved in a heated discussion over a telephone call discussing the incident last week.

In a phone call on Thursday, Biden said Israel must immediately provide more aid and protect civilians, while urging Netanyahu to “empower his negotiators” to quickly reach a ceasefire with Hamas.

Biden also increased pressure on Israel to provide more aid to devastated Gaza. He said he had spoken to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt regarding sending aid to Gaza.

“There is no reason not to provide medical and food needs for these people. This must be done now,” said Biden.
