“We will stay with Ukraine as long as there is Ukraine,” Biden told Zelenskiy at a joint White House press conference. Zelensky thanked Biden and Congress for their support, lauding Biden for building an international coalition against “terrorist Russia.”

Next, Zelensky will speak at a joint meeting of Congress. Before his arrival, the Biden administration approved plans for a new $1.85 billion security assistance package, which will also include the Patriot missile system.

Zelensky’s appearance before lawmakers comes as lawmakers work to approve a $1.7 trillion spending package that includes another $44.9 billion in emergency security and economic aid for Ukraine.

Zelensky arrived in Washington on Wednesday. This is Zelensky’s first overseas visit since Feb. 24, when Russia began its repeat invasion of Ukraine.

In the first moments of their joint meeting, Biden stressed to Zelenskiy that the United States supports a just peace in Ukraine, saying that Ukraine continue to amaze the world. In turn, Zelensky thanked Biden for US support for Ukraine in the war against Russia, noting that it is a great honor for him to be in the White House.

The president of Ukraine presented Biden with a military medal given to Zelensky by a Ukrainian army captain in Bakhmut, whom Zelensky had visited this week. Captain Zelensky asked to give this medal to Biden, who is said to be a very brave president.
