The Odysseus module, which is scheduled to land on the Moon this Thursday in what will be the first US landing in more than half a century, sent a photo of the lunar surface before its landing scheduled for 5:49 p.m. local time US Eastern Time (22:49 GMT). The President of the United States, Joe Biden, celebrated this Saturday the landing on the Moon of the Odysseus module and considered it to be “an exciting step forward in a new era of space exploration.”

In a statement, the president considered that the landing marks a “milestone” as Odysseus is the first American spacecraft to land on the lunar surface in more than 50 years, specifically since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, and, furthermore, being the first manufactured by a private company to reach the satellite.

“This has been possible thanks to American ingenuity, innovation and curiosity,” said Biden, who considered that “the United States leads the world in returning to the Moon.”

Biden recalled words spoken in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy (1961-1963) when he spoke to a group of students about why the United States is trying to achieve such difficult goals.

“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do other things,” Kennedy said then, “not because they are easy, but because they are difficult.” And he added: “That is a challenge we are willing to accept, one we are not willing to postpone, and one we intend to win.”

Remembering those words, Biden affirmed that the ideas of Kennedy They remain in force today.

«The United States does things that are difficult. We face the great scientific challenges of our time. And nothing can stop us when we work together,” said the president.

The Odysseus lunar module landed on the lunar surface this Thursday in a landing that was not without setbacks.

As Intuitive Machines – the company that manufactured the device – explained on Friday, the module is “safe and sound”, although it probably got stuck shortly after touching down and is now on its side.

Intuitive Machines, which developed the mission in collaboration with NASA, hopes to be able to take photographs of Odysseus over the weekend to confirm its position. EFE
