Biden approved secret US nuclear strategy in March – media

In March, President Joe Biden approved a classified US nuclear strategic plan that for the first time refocuses the US deterrence strategy on the rapid expansion of China’s nuclear arsenal.

The White House has never announced that Biden has endorsed a revised strategy known as the Nuclear Weapons Posture, which also aims to prepare the United States for a coordinated nuclear challenge that could ‘ could be from China, Russia and North Korea. The document, which is updated about every four years, is so classified that there are no electronic copies, only a small number of hard copies distributed to a few national security officials and Pentagon chiefs.

But recently, two senior US administration officials were allowed to hint at the change – in very limited sentences – ahead of a more detailed, unclassified message from Congress expected before Biden leaves office.

A nuclear strategist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who worked at the Pentagon said: “The President recently issued updated guidance on the use of nuclear weapons that takes into account the presence of multiple nuclear adversaries.”

He said the “military manuals explain” the dramatic increase in the size and diversity of China’s nuclear arsenal.

In June, the National Security Council’s director general for arms control and non-proliferation, Pranay Vaddi, also referred to the document, which analyzed for the first time whether the United States is prepared to deal with a nuclear crisis that will detonating simultaneously or in sequence using a combination of nuclear and non-nuclear weapons.

The new strategy, according to Mr. Waddy, emphasizes “the need to contain Russia, China and North Korea at the same time.”
