The presidents of the United States, Joe Biden, and of China, Xi Jinping, arrived in Lima this Thursday for what may be their last face to face, on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit marked by uncertainties about global trade.
Biden and Xi will meet on Saturday at the closing of the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), framed by nervousness over an escalation in the trade war between the two superpowers under the new era of Donald Trump.
Xi arrived hours before Biden to inaugurate the Chancay megaport, a multimillion-dollar project financed by China 80 km north of Lima.
The bilateral meeting between the two leaders will likely be the last before Biden returns the keys to the White House to Trump in January.
Their conversation will also take place amid tensions over China’s support for Russia in its war against Ukraine.
The two leaders, who at the previous meeting in San Francisco (United States) reached anti-drug agreements and to improve military communication, will then attend the G20 summit that will take place next Monday and Tuesday in Brazil.
Under the motto “Empower, Include, Grow”, the event in Lima began this Thursday with closed-door ministerial meetings attended by representatives from Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia and Indonesia, among others, according to the organizers.
