The outgoing president of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, and the winner of the elections, Republican Donald Trump, will meet next Wednesday, November 13 at the White House in order to begin talks for the transition of powers.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced this Saturday in a statement that Biden will receive Trump in the Oval Office next Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Washington time (4:00 p.m. GMT).
Trump, who already governed the country between 2017 and 2021, won the elections last Tuesday over the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, who last July took over from Biden as her party’s candidate.
In the absence of scrutiny in the state of Arizona, the last one to be awarded, Trump won 301 electoral votes, 31 more votes than the 270 needed to win the Presidency, compared to the 226 garnered by Harris.
In an address to the nation on Thursday, Biden promised to ensure a “peaceful and orderly transition” to transfer power to Trump and sought to comfort Democrats by assuring that “America is going to be fine.”
Biden did not confirm whether he will attend Trump’s inauguration in person on January 20, 2025, but hinted that he might: “I will keep my promises and honor the Constitution on January 20; “We will have a peaceful transition of power in the United States,” he stated.
When Trump lost the election in 2020 to Biden, he refused to accept the result and became the first president in 150 years not to attend his successor’s inauguration.
The Republican returns to power four years after a mob of his followers stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to stop the transition of powers.
In addition to winning the White House, the Republicans also obtained the majority in the Senate and the count points to a majority also in the House of Representatives, which would give Trump ample power. EFE
