Joe Biden appeared unifying in his speech to the American people. A day after Donald Trump‘s victory, the US president pledged for a smooth transition to power as “the American people deserve”.
Initially, President Biden emphasized: “For over 200 years, America has conducted the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world. This is not an exaggeration. This is a fact. Where the people, the people vote and choose their own leaders, and do so peacefully. And we are in a democracy. The will of the people always prevails.
Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory and assured him that I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and smooth transition. This is what the American people deserve.”.
He then referred to Kamala Harris: “I also spoke with Kamala Harris with whom we worked closely. She ran an inspiring campaign and everyone saw something I learned to respect so much early on, her character. He has a spine of steel and he has great character, real character. She gave it her all and she and her team should be proud.”.
«You can’t love your country only when you win”
Immediately after, he sent a message of unity to the American people, stressing: “I know for some people it’s time to win, to state the obvious. For others, it is a moment of loss. Campaigns are competitions, of competing visions. The country chooses between one or the other.
You can’t love your country only when you win. You cannot love your neighbor only when you agree. Something we all need to do regardless of who we side with is to see each other not as an adversary but as a fellow countryman.
The US electoral system is honest, fair and uncorrupted. I want to convey my thanks to everyone who worked on the election. Many of them are volunteers and did it out of love for their country. On January 20th we will have a peaceful transition for the US.”
He then sent a message inside the Democrats saying: “Don’t forget what we have achieved in these four years. Failures are inevitable, but giving up is unforgettable. Defeat does not mean we are defeated. We lost a battle. This is the story of the USA. We’ll be fine. It is the story of all of us not some of us. We must continue. We have to keep our faith.”
