In the United States, the Biden administration was successful in its first year in power in reuniting 100 migrant children with their parents. These minors had been separated from their families after their illegal crossing of the US-Mexico border under the mandate of Donald Trump.
By virtue of his so-called “zero tolerance” policy to combat illegal immigration, former President Trump had separated at least 5,000 children of their parents. Many of them still have not reunited with their families, because the obstacles are still numerous.
« I would have liked us to move forward much faster »Admits Michelle Brané this weekend. She heads the task force on family reunification, set up by the Biden administration.
From the first day of his mandate, the Democratic president issued a decree to reunite migrant families separated by Donald Trump. But the team in charge of this colossal work faces several difficulties: the first is to trace each child and their family. The files are incomplete. And the parents, most of them from Central America, have been deported and sent home while the children are held in the United States.
In one year, the working group has already been able to identify and register 345 other children still separated from their families. But Michelle Brané estimates that 1,150 additional minors have yet to be located.
The Biden administration has set up an internet portal that allows their parents to identify themselves. The American Minister of Homeland Security is reassuring: these families have nothing to fear. In a humanitarian capacity, they will have the right to live and work in the United States.
