A similar scandal has long involved Biden’s predecessor and fiercest competitor, US ex-president Donald Trump, whose residence in Florida last year was searched and found a series of secret documents that he had not handed over to the archives.
Biden is accused of negligent handling of classified documents
The US Department of Justice announced at the beginning of the week that about ten secret documents were found in the office of the Penn Biden Center in Washington, or the think tank that Biden led before being elected president and which is located near the White House.
The documents were found in a locked cabinet before last fall’s midterm elections, when members of Biden’s team were cleaning the office.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is involved in the investigation of the documents.
The documents are said to contain US intelligence memos and briefing materials relating to Ukraine, Iran and the United Kingdom.
The documents relate to Biden’s time as vice president of the United States under President Barack Obama, but it is unclear why the documents ended up in his private office, which he began using after leaving the vice presidency.
On Wednesday, the scandal will expand, as news has emerged that Biden’s aides have found another pile of classified documents. However, it is not known when and where it was found.
By law, all White House documents, including classified ones, must be turned over to the US National Archives after the administration’s term ends.
The White House has so far been evasive in commenting on the documents found. Biden’s press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre did not want to give details and mostly repeated what Biden himself had mentioned.
“As the president mentioned, he was surprised to learn that the documents were found there. He said he didn’t know what was in them.
As soon as his lawyers realized that these documents were there, they did the right thing and immediately archived them. As he said, his team is fully cooperating with the investigation.”
Jean-Pierre also avoided answering why the general public became aware of the discovery of the documents only two months later, and did not specify when Biden was informed about the discovery of the documents.
The frenzy surrounding the discovery of classified documents at Biden’s house can now be used by the Republicans, who, in parallel with this scandal, have already launched an investigation into the president and his family members in the House of Representatives committee in their rhetoric against the owner of the White House.
