There is less space for cars on Neckarstrasse in the course of Bundesstrasse 3 and Heidelberger Strasse. After a six-month traffic test, a permanent solution is planned in Darmstadt.
In Darmstadt, the proportion of bicycle traffic is steadily increasing and this is now also becoming apparent on the main roads. After the cyclist-friendly redesign of sections of the route on Rheinstraße or Landgraf-Georg-Straße, in the past few days you have also been on Neckarstraße in the course of Bundesstraße 3 as well as on the also busy Heidelberger Straße between Rheinstraße and Heinrichstraße in both directions new lanes for bicycles have been marked in yellow. One lane less is now available for motorized traffic, which is not very popular with drivers or business associations.
As part of a six-month traffic test, the city of Darmstadt wants to test, according to the mayor and traffic department head Jochen Partsch (Greens), how bicycle traffic can be kept on the road permanently. Until now, cyclists had to share the narrow side space on the two main roads with pedestrians.
According to Partsch, the traffic test is intended on the one hand to achieve “a significantly fairer division of the street space”. On the other hand, cyclists should also be given enough space to get quickly and safely from downtown Darmstadt to the southern parts of the city and back. According to Partsch, a continuous, attractive cycle route from the center to Eberstadt is to be created along Neckarstrasse and Heidelberger Strasse. A census of the city has shown that more than a thousand cyclists in each direction are on the Neckarstrasse every day.
The new lanes on Neckarstrasse and Heidelberger Strasse are part of five traffic tests with which the city wants to react to the changed mobility behavior. Lanes marked in yellow on Bleichstrasse and Roßdörfer Platz have been reserved for cyclists for several weeks. In the next few weeks, more cycle lanes are to be shown on Zeughausstrasse and Eschollbrücker Strasse.
A spokesman for the city of Darmstadt also announced on Friday afternoon that the event planned for this Sunday in Darmstadt-Wixhausen to open a further section of the Frankfurt-Darmstadt cycle highway had been canceled by the Frankfurt / Rhein-Main regional association due to the rapidly increasing number of corona infections.
