Bibi Sharmeen Jugreet, a rising star in biopharmaceutical science

Mauritian Bibi Sharmeen Jugreet receives her trophy

Bibi Sharmeen Jugreet is a doctoral candidate in biopharmaceutical sciences at the University of Mauritius, specializing in biochemical research methods. She is one of the few scientists who direct their research into the pharmacological and cosmeceutical potential of oils in Africa.

“Finding solutions that could benefit African populations, through the promotion of processed natural products”, such is the motivation of Bibi Sharmeen Jugreet who specializes in biochemical research methods. She directs her scientific research in the evaluation of the pharmacological and cosmeceutical potential of essential oils derived from medicinal plants for ethnotraditional use from Mauritius, using a multidisciplinary approach. “The promotion of locally processed natural products will give a new appeal to natural medicine and allow patients to have access to treatments. », she declares.

Winner of the “For Women In Science 2021” award

As a scientist, Bibi Sharmeen Jugreet is aware of her role in the fight against disease in Africa. She intends to develop a topical antimicrobial formulation with essential oils as natural antimicrobial agents, in order to optimize their use in the effective management and treatment of skin infections. This approach could help diabetic patients and others with weak immune systems who often face skin infections.

Following advanced research in alternative and complementary medicine as well as its promotion of natural phytochemical products derived from plants, she was awarded the 12e edition of the “For Women In Science 2021” award. This award aims to promote women scientists in Africa, in order to strengthen their visibility and representativeness in the science sector. Through this award, Bibi Sharmeen Jugreet benefits from support in the form of training in leadership, negotiation and communication which complements her academic career to carry out her scientific research.
