The Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB) has published its 2023 annual report. It provides information on the most important developments in vocational education and training as well as the highlights of BIBB’s work in the past year.
BIBB President Friedrich Hubert Esser explains: “The current labor market data give cause for concern. The weakness in the labor market continues, and unemployment and underemployment have increased after seasonal adjustment. The shortage of skilled workers and labor in Germany will continue to worsen by 2030. Economists predict that the loss of potential work volume due to ageing alone will amount to 3.2 billion working hours. The skills gap is growing, particularly at expert and specialist level. A strong vocational training system can help to defuse this skilled labor problem if it meets the requirements of a transformative age. Vocational training must therefore become more flexible, inclusive and excellent. Well-trained skilled workers are a prerequisite for the success of the transformation. This is another reason why we should not wait any longer to modernize vocational training and should boldly take action!”
The annual report now available provides insights into the BIBB’s key fields of activity. It provides information on the key results of BIBB’s research and development work, for example on the topics of training market development and social-ecological transformation projects. The annual report also provides an overview of the modernization of training regulations and advanced training rules as well as new work in the context of higher-level vocational training. Network coordination in vocational training, ensuring transparency in the educational landscape, skilled immigration and results and developments from international vocational training cooperation are other key areas.
