In preparation for the start of the World Cup, several Latvian national biathletes took part in the opening competition of the season in Sweden over the weekend, where both Baiba Bendika and Aleksandrs Patrijuks entered the top ten, according to the organizers.
Bendika with two shooting errors stood 9th in the 7.5-kilometer sprint on Saturday, one and a half minutes behind the winning Swedish Olympic champion Hanna Ēberga. In the competition, which was broadcast live on Swedish television, the Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Stina Nilsone, who took the 11th place, made her debut in biathlon. Unlike his infallible compatriot Eberg, Nilson made three mistakes in the firefight.
Patrijuks, on the other hand, won the 8th place in the shortened 15-kilometer individual distance on Sunday and made only two mistakes in four lines of fire, which was the second best result in the shooting. Sebastian Samuelson, two minutes and 41.3 seconds faster, won the gold medal in the Swedish Relay Quartet in Pyongyang. Latvia was also represented by Edgars Mise, who did not shoot eight goals and took 36th place.
In Bendika’s shortened 12.5-kilometer individual distance, the women had six shooting errors that prevented them from climbing above 13th place four minutes and 33.6 seconds behind winner Hanna Ēberga. The second Latvian athlete Sanita Buliņa reached the 29th place in the competition of 56 participants with seven shooting errors.
On Saturday in the Idre sprint for men, Patrijuks won the 14th place in the competition of 69 participants.
The World Biathlon Cup will start at the end of November in Kontiolahti, Finland.
