In Sofia, the average salary is now BGN 3,130, which has increased by BGN 100 in just three months. Average wages are the lowest in the districts of Smolyan, Blagoevgrad, Silistra and Kyustendil. They are half of the average salary in the capital.
According to economist Associate Professor Krasen Stanchev from the Institute for Market Economy, Bulgarians collected 10 times more external savings in 2023. “Sofia represents a little less than half of the Bulgarian economy. Five years ago, the differences between salaries in different cities were greater, they are now shrinking.
The capital has about 36% imports from other parts of the country. The fact that when you work on a contract abroad for several months is also important, it is a foreign investment and not to the domestic economy,” he pointed out to Nova TV.
For his part, Assoc. Prof. Ognyan Boyukliev from the Institute for Economic Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences emphasized the importance of predictability and the utilization of permanent resources. “Inflation is low, but this is also at the expense of lower food prices – a blow to producers. For example, there is a 3 times exceeded egg import quota. Sofia has the highest incomes, but only 10 km from it a drastic difference is visible. The gap between village and city is large, but it is also about regional politics,” he believes.
