After the defeat in Braunschweig, BG Managing Director Frank Meinertshagen spoke to the moderators of the final phase of the main round in the “Postgame” podcast of the basketball magazine BIG. “My mood is rather moderate,” admitted the club boss shortly after the clear 64:101. He didn’t want to hear about the excuse that the team had had a “wasted day”: “This excuse would be too cheap. We didn’t stand a chance against Heidelberg and Würzburg before that.”

Meinertshagen criticized the lack of intensity, Braunschweig acted much more intensively. “We had this problem at the beginning of this season. It’s a little surprising that it’s hitting us again.” He doesn’t accept Kamar Baldwin’s serious injury as an excuse. “It started earlier, it’s more of a team problem.” The team made Braunschweig strong due to the rapid deficit and mistakes on the defensive, allowing the opponent too many open throws.

Roel Moors has a special eye for guards
When asked about the good guards in the Veilchen jersey, Meinertshagen passed this praise on to head coach Roel Moors. It is his network, his observation of the market and his negotiations that players of Baldwin’s caliber, but also Rihard’s Lomasz in the past season or now Jeremiah Martin come to Göttingen. “Roel was a good guard himself, he probably has a special eye for it.”

The American Martin was only a few days after his arrival in Göttingen and two days of training with the team top scorer of the BG in Braunschweig. Initially inconspicuous and not necessarily sought after by his teammates, the 25-year-old played more and more conspicuously as the season progressed, offered strong individual actions and showed a certain elegance with the ball against the massive Löwen defence. Moors described the newly signed guard’s debut as “okay for his first game”, but immediately added: “I expect more from him, especially defensively. But it’s also difficult to get into a new team. You can’t expect him to solve all the problems as a new player. The other players have to learn to play alongside him.”

BG wants to regain its old self-confidence
The view of the upcoming opponent Frankfurt is rather secondary for the BG coach. “We have to sort things out, we have to believe in ourselves again and be self-confident,” he demands of his players. He asks them to think about the victories against Alba Berlin, Bonn, Ludwigsburg and even twice against Ulm: “We did a lot of good things, maybe even played above our level at times. But now we’re clearly playing underneath. The players who know the concept have to believe in their qualities.” The team has recently experienced a lot of pressure. He tried to keep this pressure away from her. “She hasn’t had much fun in the past few weeks, but we’ve been working on having fun again in the last few days.” The training hall has been filled with more life again.

Mathis Mönninghoff has trained again, it remains to be seen how long he can be used. Jake Toolson, who broke his nose during a defensive action after an elbow by Braunschweig’s Owen Klassen, cannot play. Kamar Baldwin will be in the hall, he underwent a successful operation near Rosenheim by a specialist. It is planned that he will say goodbye to the USA in the coming week and complete his rehab there.

Kamar Baldwin embodies BG values
“We can understand Kamar’s decision to return to his home country very well,” said BG head coach Roel Moors. “His serious injury is first and foremost a dramatic incident for which we are very sorry. Kamar was having a great season up until his injury and embodies the BG values of respect, discipline and a winning mentality. He was an MVP candidate so it’s a shame he can’t show his qualities until the end of the season. I am sure that after rehab he will regain his strength and have a successful career because he is not only a good professional athlete but also a great person.

Belief in yourself also means that the violet team doesn’t give up after an early deficit and has the feeling that the game is already over. “We also need our fans for this. The team deserves more respect,” Moors hopes for great fan support in the next two games. With immediate effect, all corona-related restrictions for the BG home games have been lifted – 3,447 spectators are allowed in the Sparkassen-Arena again. “In principle, lifting most of the restrictions is correct because, despite the high number of cases, there is currently no risk of the health system being overloaded,” says BG Managing Director Meinertshagen. “In view of the high number of cases, we recommend that fans continue to wear an FFP2 mask, even if this is no longer mandatory.” Tickets are still available online or from 5.30 p.m. at the box office in the Sparkassen-Arena.
